Encontra-se aberta a apresentação de candidatos para prémio Tulip dos Defensores de Direitos Humanos de 2009.

Qualquer pessoa pode indicar um candidato ao prémio defensores dos direitos humanos através do site http://www.humanrightstulip.org/. O prémio é da iniciativa do Governo Holandês e será entregue pelo Ministro Holandês dos Negócios Estrangeiros no dia 9 de Novembro.

Criado no ano passado pelo Governo Holandês, o prémio Tulip para os Defensores dos Direitos Humanos é uma expressão de apreciação que visa reconhecer pessoas que tenham demonstrado coragem moral excepcional na protecção e promoção dos direitos dos seus concidadãos. “Os defensores dos direitos humanos precisam de ter oportunidade para realizar melhor o seu trabalho e em segurança.

Infelizmente, muitas vezes sofrem ameaças e tornam-se alvo dos violadores dos direitos humanos. O prémio Tulip para os Defensores dos Direitos Humanos, tira-os do anonimato. É por essa razão que o Governo Holandês vê este prémio como uma necessidade,” explica o Ministro Verhagen. Somente podem ser indicados indivíduos para o prémio; organizações não são elegíveis para consideração.

Estes devem ser defensores dos direitos humanos que trabalham a tempo inteiro na promoção ou protecção dos direitos humanos. Pessoas que tenhas passado ou estão em risco de sofrer consequências negativas a nível pessoal, como resultado do seu trabalho. Os indivíduos nomeados são activistas que podem beneficiar-se do reconhecimento e visibilidade associada a atribuição do prémio.

O vencedor recebe uma estatueta oficial comemorativa dos Defensores dos Direitos Humanos Tulip e um valor monetário de 10.000,00 Euros. Ele ou ela tem também a possibilidade de submeter uma proposta de projecto no valor de 100.000,00 Euros, a ser usado para intensificar o trabalho do vencedor como defensor dos direitos humanos.

A defensora dos direitos humanos de nacionalidade Congolesa, Justine Masika, recebeu o primeiro prémio Tulip dos Defensores dos Direitos Humanos em 2008, o qual foi entregue pelo Ministro Verhagen. Masika chefia uma organização que combate a propagação da violência sexual que as mulheres sofrem no conflito armado no Congo oriental. A indicação dos candidatos deve ser feita até ao dia 23 de Agosto.

O júri, composto por Antony Burgmans, Jaap Doek, Cisca Dresselhuys, Victor Scheffers e Rabbi Soetendorp, irá seleccionar três candidatos. Caberá ao Ministro Holandês dos Negócios Estrangeiros escolher o vencedor entre os três seleccionados.

Call for nominations for Human Rights Defenders Tulip 2009

Nominations are now being accepted for the 2009 Human Rights Defenders Tulip award.

Anyone can nominate a candidate for the human rights defenders award at http://www.humanrightstulip.org/. The award, an initiative of the Dutch Government, will be presented by the Dutch Minister of Foreign Affairs on 9 November.

Established last year by the Dutch government, the Human Rights Defenders Tulip is an expression of appreciation intended to acknowledge persons who have shown exceptional moral courage in protecting and promoting the rights of fellow citizens. “Human rights defenders need to have the opportunity to do their work well, in safety.

They unfortunately often face threats and become the target of human rights violations. The Human Rights Defenders Tulip brings them out of anonymity. That is why the Dutch government views this award as a necessity,” Minister Verhagen explains. Only individuals can be nominated for the award; organisations are not eligible for consideration.

They should be human rights defenders who work full-time to promote or protect human rights. They should have faced or be at risk of facing negative personal consequences as a result of their work. The individual nominees are activists who could benefit from the recognition and visibility associated with winning the award.

The winner receives an official commemorative statuette, the Human Rights Defenders Tulip, and an individual cash award of EUR 10,000. He or she also has the opportunity to submit a proposal for a project to the value of up to EUR 100,000, to be used to intensify the winner’s work as a human rights defender.

Congolese human rights defender Justine Masika received the first Human Rights Defenders Tulip in 2008, presented by Minister Verhagen. Masika heads an organisation that combats the widespread sexual violence that women face in the armed conflict in eastern Congo. Nominations must be received by 23 August at the latest.

The jury, comprising Antony Burgmans, Jaap Doek, Cisca Dresselhuys, Victor Scheffers and Rabbi Soetendorp, will nominate three candidates. The Dutch Minister of Foreign Affairs will select the final winner from these three nominees.
